Maddie is my dreamer. She doesn't get why there isn't world peace. She doesn't get why there is pollution. Why can't people just care about each other and the environment. She has always loved the ocean. She has always felt a kinship with the sea. I remember the vacation on Cape Cod where she spent hours upon hours trying to save hundreds of crabs that washed up in the seaweed from being cleaned up off the beach by the giant machines. She did this everyday, hoping that she saved at least a few from certain death. She cries when she sees sea animals stuck in places they shouldnt be, news reports of beached whales, dolpins caught in fishing nets etc. She has always said she wanted to be a marine biologist, she has always said she wants to do something to save the oceans.
We have been members of the Pacific Whale Foundation in Maui for the past 6 years. They do wonderful work. Maddie went on a snorkeling trip with them and got to swim with the sea turtles. Yet another of her dreams being fulfilled. The Pacific Whale foundation told her that when she was 17, she could spend summers volunteering with the foundation working with the protected species on Maui. How cool is that.
